A Comprehensive Guide to Athlete’s Foot

Athlete's Foot is common among athletes

For many people, athlete’s foot is a persistent problem. As its name suggests, this condition is more common among those who live active lifestyles; however, anyone can get it. Experts say that the majority of people will contract this infection at some point in their lifetime.

Understanding what athlete’s foot is and what causes it is vital to keeping your feet happy and healthy.

What is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that affects the top layer of skin, usually on the underside of the foot or between the toes. Most cases result in a mild rash and skin irritation, but other symptoms include burning, itching, or stinging.

Causes

The fungus that causes all of this to happen, Trichophyton, is a type of dermatophyte. Dermatophytes are fungi that live harmlessly on our human skin. Usually, when the skin is kept clean and dry, the reproduction of dermatophytes is limited, but when subjected to warm, moist conditions, their reproduction can increase, causing athlete’s foot.

Thick footwear can create the ideal breeding ground that Trichophytons need to reproduce, as they trap moisture and heat inside.

Athlete’s foot is also contagious and can also spread through both direct and indirect contact.

Direct contact with skin infected with athlete’s foot can put you at risk for contracting the infection. Coming in contact with infected surfaces such as socks, shoes, towels, shower floors, or bedsheets, also puts you at risk.

Treatment

Fortunately, most mild cases are treatable at home with over-the-counter medications that are applied directly to the skin in the form of a powder, spray, or cream. However, if the problem persists it is best to seek out the advice trained medical professional.  A doctor may prescribe you a stronger anti-fungal medication (typically taken orally) to alleviate your symptoms.

When performing activities that may cause your feet to sweat, such as exercise, it is best to opt for thin socks and canvas shoes that allow sufficient ventilation to your feet. This helps to ensure that your feet and toes stay cool and dry, reducing the chances of contracting this infection.
